Project/Product Description

Fit-out of Eastern Asian Restaurant from new shell site
Project completion date: 17th June 2023
Site duration: 12 weeks
This is a completely new evolution of the existing Tampopo brand.

The new restaurant features a double-height 726m2 space which creates a shopfront with impact – clearly visible from outside, it reveals some of the playful lighting features, mirrored walls and arched timber details within, along with the striking illuminated central island bar. The restaurant operates from morning brunch service through to a late-night buzzy bar, welcoming families, groups and individuals at different times, and our design needed to support a smooth operation. We used a mix of flooring types, lighting and furniture to create zones within the restaurant and bar areas, while careful planning of ceiling heights and shapes makes movement throughout the venue seamless and instinctive.

A curved bar at the heart of the venue is a sociable space, with parasol-shaped canopy with an illuminated bar top from a translucent composite surface adding an inviting glow which highlights the tiled frontage. A dramatic, sweeping curved ceiling radiates from the bar, which is topped with a striking parasol-shaped canopy. Elsewhere, a raised area includes the open kitchen pass, allowing guests to enjoy the theatre of chefs at work. This area features a mirrored wall panel, overlaid with graphics of cranes and koi – this gives the impression of a double width space and reflects the brightly-coloured lanterns and panelled ceiling above.

Materials Used

Amber lite: Illuminated bar top used to create impact even from the outside where the view of the glowing bar top draws customers into the space. This helps promote the cocktail and bar offer which is new to the brand which previously focused on the food offer. Creates a real sense of excitement and is a vital part of the curved island bar concept which is at the heart of the venue.

Versital: Hot pink stone effect vanity tops to the WC areas which are hugely impactful in the much talked about space.

Patterned geometric ceramic tiles to perimeter of the curved island bar and also in the customer WC areas from Claybrooke Studio. Used in a mix of colours to tie in with the overall design concept.

Bespoke vinyl pattern applied to mirrored panels. Vinyl pattern depicting cranes and koi to create a layered effect and soften the mirrored effect. This was a really cost effective solution and the use of patterned mirror located next to the curved bar helps create the illusion of a complete circle.

Bespoke lowered ceiling design over the raised seating area formed as a closed timber pergola using patterned oriental wallpaper to help create the image of depth and colour.

Inclusion of Japanese style char'd timber to add to the mixed materials pallet and help arrive at a perfect mix of texture and depth. It was vital that the design arrived at the right balance of "polish and gloss" with "rustic and industrial". The Char'd timber works brilliantly where we have located lighting including a recessed LED strip light within a circular framed recess window to the first floor gallery space. This circle depicts a Japanese "Moon arch" and is visible from the outside of the venue.

Sustainability

n/a

Where possible we have sourced from a sustainable materials palette.

Issues Faced

Many materials used are used in a completely bespoke manner and are incorporated within bespoke joinery details. We worked carefully within the limits of the light fittings, materials and of course a tight project budget and programme. Based on these constraints many details evolved on site and were only made possible due to the team effort of all involved.

Achieving the seamless curves required for the functioning bar fitting including incorporation of functioning catering equipment - curves are always a challenge!

Additional Comments

Several surfaces specified could be great contenders for this award.
