Project/Product Description | LOST LINDENBERG We are at LOST LINDENBERG, a new guest collective far removed from Bali‘s garish mass tourism: Surfing waves at sunrise against a backdrop of pristine black lava sand; enjoying peace and quiet in the open-plan communal spaces; practising yoga under the pergola; enjoying bonfires on the beach, drinking self-harvested coconuts in the turquoise pool or an aroma massage in the jungle spa; in the evenings, sumptuous plant-based dinners at the restaurant and the sharing of stories. LOST LINDENBERG focuses on the collective experience of the guests, who are invited to spend their time together in the property’s communal areas. Retreat is offered in each of the eight lovingly-designed rooms, which are elevated high amongst the treetops of the West Balinese palm jungle, set on a long and pristine, glistening black lava sand beach. LOST LINDENBERG is the fifth project, and the first in Indonesia from the young hospitality company LINDENBERG. Just as with their previous concepts, LOST LINDENBERG focuses on the collective experience of the guests, who are invited to spend their time together in the property’s communal areas. Retreat is offered in each of the eight lovingly-designed rooms, which are elevated high amongst the treetops of the West Balinese palm jungle, set on a long and pristine, glistening black lava sand beach. The own surf spot on the remote black sand beach at the doorstep invites the guests to surf calmly in an intimate atmosphere. In the plant-based restaurant and bar guests sit on a large table together. The small spa is located in LOST’s jungle. "The inspiration for this concept was the magic, this sweet, warm melancholy of the location, the black lava sand and the fantastic waves. Not just another rattan-clad honeymoon hotel, but instead pure nature, collective surfing, immersion in a fascinating culture, and homegrown pineapples“ (Denise Omurca, Managing Director). LOST offers a dreamy experience in the midst of a mystical jungle with spaces and walkways high off the ground. A challenge and at the same time one of the great advantages is the location: LOST LINDENBERG is situated on the largely untouched west coast of Bali, in the middle of the jungle. So we had the ambition to fit naturally into the scenario and at the same time offer comfort to our guests. So we constructed staggered towers, tree houses, beside tall coconut trees that provide a glimpse of the sea in front. "We wanted to give the feeling of walking in a different world, of resting on a floating ship, elevated and safe, with the wild jungle at your doorstep." (Alexis Dornier, architect) Grouped closely together, the towers form a floating village in the trees. “With LOST we move in a dream world, somewhere between fiction and reality.” (Alexis Dornier) The interiors are warm and cosy, as if they want to embrace us, integrating linen fabrics, lava stone, tropical hardwood, burnt teak and river stones. "The wooden blinds in the bathroom blur the line between outdoors and indoors, letting the sea breeze in while providing a sense of protection from the hot sun. Panoramic windows allow us to spot boats passing by on the horizon." (Max Jencquel, interior designer). The furniture, the lamps, the ceramic tableware and almost all the accessories in this project were custom designed for LOST. Art plays an essential role, local Indonesian antiques meet contemporary photographs. In the entrance area, the tropical jungle is interrupted by a huge neon sign installation by renowned Frankfurt artist Tobias Rehberger. LOST operates in an eco-friendly, low-waste manner. Solar panels supply the property with energy, and fruits and vegetables from LOST’s own permaculture are used in the restaurant. All products such as soaps and toilet paper, are produced regionally and fairly; litter is collected in weekly beach clean-ups; the restaurant - like all LINDENBERG projects - is entirely plant-based (free of animal products). LOST was created with the aim of creating an exceptional guest experience in the breathtaking nature of West Bali and an architectural and design concept that is inspired by the jungle environment. "We have created a home that celebrates collectively shared moments and the luxury of silence and space, warmly welcomed and cared for by a young Indonesian team. With our own interpretation of luxury, defined for us by the magic of unpretentiousness, we freed ourselves from external expectations.” (Denise Omurca, CEO) |
Materials Used | The predominant material is sustainably-sourced wood in various patterns and directions, such as Bengkirai wood, the floors are covered with Bali green stone, and brass is used as an accent in the whole composition. And a lot of plants were used. The idea was to streamline the material palette to keep a cohesive design within the tropical landscape. Alexis Dornier and Studio Jencquel are responsible for LOST’s architecture. “The main idea was to create an unusual, dreamy experience in the midst of a mystical jungle. We imagined spaces and walkways high off the ground. Constructed beside tall coconut trees, the staggered towers provide a glimpse of the sea in front. The towers are connected by a so-called highline, an elevated walkway pointing towards the sea. We wanted to give the feeling of walking in a different world, of resting on a floating ship, elevated and safe, with the wild jungle at your doorstep. Grouped close together, the towers form a quasi village in the trees, a small floating society. LOST is designed with great attention to detail, with examples of the traditional contrasted by exaggerations. The predominant material is sustainably-sourced wood in various patterns and directions, the floors are covered with Bali green stone, and brass is used as an accent in the whole composition. With LOST we move in a dream world, somewhere between fiction and reality." (Alexis Dornier) |
Sustainability | In the conception and design of LOST LINDENBERG, a sustainable and social approach was followed in many aspects. Solar panels have been built on the property to supply the house with energy. Furthermore, permaculture was incorporated into the landscape architecture to supply the in-house restaurant with vegetables and fruit without transport routes. Like all LINDENBERG projects, the restaurant is purely plant-based (free of animal products). It also operates in an environmentally friendly and low-waste manner. Examples of this are our paperless check-in system and the elimination of plastic in all in-house activities. In addition, the LOST has its own compost production from all organic waste. This compost is later used for our own garden and permaculture. Once a month, we have a community beach cleanup where we collaborate with the local organization Ocean Mata and the communities of Pekutatan, Medewi and surrounding areas. Ocean Mata recycles the collected plastics, which are later turned into useful products. All products such as soaps and toilet paper come from regional and fair production. To contribute to the local community, LINDENBERG founded LOST BUNCH, an educational program with local surfers that supports, encourages and opens up new perspectives for children and young adults in Medewi. Many of these young people are passionate about surfing, but have no access to educational institutions. The programme combines surfing lessons with educational classes such as English and sustainability. We have also started an initiative to help the numerous street dogs in the area, some of which are in terrible conditions: THE LOST DOGS. We have teamed up with local veterans Dr Kadek Jaya Utama and Pekutatan local Pak Komang to support dogs in need. On two days each month, we invite the local community to bring their animals for free sterilisations and any medical treatments. |
Issues Faced | The location of the site is remote and initially the land had very restricted access. In the planning process it became clear that we would require more land to make the project functional. The client then acquired the land, doubling the size of the initial land, while keeping the same building surface for the program. This then enabled us to create the iconic garden entrance sequence in conjunction with Tobias Rehberger’s wall, herewith officially giving birth to the LOST concept. To create a comfortable environment in a rather inhospitable environment without drawing a clearly defined boundary that would separate both. I wanted guests to feel that they are one with the environment, while at the same time feeling safe and secure in it. Lifting the guests off the ground is one way to deal with this, while at the same time removing any walls or fences between the built and the non-built is how it was achieved. |
